Philadelphians can eat, drink and dance the night away while they support the fight against pediatric cancer at the same time. The Philadelphia Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association is hosting the 5th Annual Liberty Ball, A Knight for the Kids, at the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
This semi-formal charity ball will include cocktails, dinner, music and dancing, special appearances from cancer survivors and speakers like the Austin Family, who were helped by the Four Diamonds Fund. The master of ceremony for the evening will be Erica Grow, a meteorologist for 6ABC and a Penn State graduate. All of the proceeds will go toward the 2010 Penn State Dance Marathon grand total, which benefits the Four Diamonds Fund, pediatric cancer research, and treatment at the Hershey Medical Center. This event is open to the public. A limited number of tickets will be sold at $95 per person (the price will increase after these are sold out) and can be purchased at www.libertyball.org or by sending a check to PSAA-Philadelphia Chapter, PO Box 21233, Philadelphia, PA 19114.
The Four Diamonds Fund was created in 1972 after the death of 14-year old Christopher Millard, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 11. It derives its name from a story that Christopher wrote during his battle with cancer. In Chris’ story, a knight must find the four diamonds of Courage, Wisdom, Honesty and Strength to be released from captivity by an evil sorceress. The four diamonds are the traits Chris believed were necessary to overcome cancer.
