“Success in the City” Signature Event Recap

On Thursday, May 17th, YPN hosted its inaugural signature event, Success in the City. Hosted by The Hub Cira Centre, the event featured five great speakers. They discussed their personal success stories and how their industries have impacted Philadelphia’s business community, booming economy and social scene. The speakers were Dan Stern, owner of Gayle and RAE restaurants, Matthew Izzo, designer and founder of his own brand, Scott Palmer, director of Public Affairs for the Phillies, and Kenny Gamble, founder of Universal Companies; moderating was Lori Wilson from NBC10. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was upbeat and fun.

A special thanks to the YPN Board and the events committee for helping to make this event great and to those who helped Working Solutions. YPN donated over $300 to help fund a summer paid internship for a Philadelphia high school student as a result of donations from YPN members at “Success in the City.”

With each year to come, we hope to make this event bigger and better than the previous. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s signature event!

Pennsylvania’s Transportation Funding Crisis impacts all YPN members who drive, take a bus, train or trolley to work.

The SEPTA Board of Directors must vote on a fiscal budget and also address an anticipated $129 million deficit. Without a dedicated source of funding for public transit, SEPTA will ultimately have no other option but to impose a 31% fare increase, 20% service cuts and at least 300 to 400 layoffs. Our region is about to experience an economic heart attack without a resolution of Pennsylvania’s transportation funding crisis.

Essential to our efforts is a sound investment strategy for Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure which includes:

  • a dedicated funding source for public transit, statewide, that is broad-based, predictable and inflation-sensitive -- to end chronic operating budget shortfalls, and to allow for planning and growth
  • a capital program employing prudent use of debt and innovative financing tools to enable highways, bridges and transit systems to complete state of good repair initiatives and address changing regional needs.

We need your help. Please contact your state legislators and the Governor and tell them to provide a sound investment strategy for the Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure that will insure and improve the competitiveness of the region. It’s easy. Simply click on the graphic below and follow the directions provided. You will have the opportunity to directly explain why public transit is so important to the region’s economic vitality and why deteriorating roads, highways and bridges threaten your safety and ability to travel.
