This month YPN encourages you to:
Update from YPN Chair: Steve GrandizioWow, we are more than half-way through another amazing YPN season, our eleventh! I hope that it has lived up to your expectations with exciting networking opportunities featuring fabulous speakers at some of the city’s top locations. As one of the region’s premier networking groups, that’s always been our primary objective. But, this year more than ever, YPN has strived to become more involved with our community. Our biggest project has been the “unofficial” adoption of McClure Elementary School in North Philadelphia. Through this initiative, YPN has painted over school-yard graffiti, held a successful book drive, and volunteered in the Principal for a day event. Stay tuned for more ways to get involved with McClure in the spring. At our December event, Philadelphia legend Sonny Hill addressed the topic of giving back to the community. Mr. Hill’s philosophy is that all kids are given an opportunity at some point. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is those who succeed are prepared to answer the call when “opportunity knocks”. This summer, the Chamber is embarking on a campaign to ensure that “opportunity knocks” for 1,000 local high school students. Working Solutions is a Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce youth workforce development initiative, supported by Commerce Bank and WorkReady managing partners Philadelphia Youth Network, School District of Philadelphia and the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The goal of Working Solutions is to provide youth with the tools and experience necessary to become capable and productive citizens and employees. Working Solutions connects the business community with Philadelphia youth through WorkReady Philadelphia's paid summer internships, mentoring opportunities, advocacy and financial contributions. Employer-Paid Internships provide Philadelphia high school students with paid workplace experiences at regional businesses for six weeks in the summer from July through August. For an overview of the program, please visit http://www.greaterphilachamber.com/download/programs/ws-get-involved.pdf The purpose of this internship is to expose young people to real-life work experiences and better prepare them to be productive citizens and employees. There’s no doubt that this project will pay major dividends in making this region the best that it can be in the future. How can YPN help? Well, in order for the Chamber to reach this ambitious goal, they need to build awareness… to make sure that every employer knows about Working Solutions. So, if you are a small business owner, please enroll your company. If you are an employee, make sure that you tell your employer about this program and its importance in the future of the region. By June, there’s no doubt that there will be 1,000 Philadelphia kids prepared to answer the door of opportunity. It’s our goal to make sure that there is an employer knocking on every one of their doors.
“DEAR” VOLUNTEERSWe apologize for the miscommunication regarding the DEAR event at McClure Elementary School. Unfortunately, no one expected the bad weather on the day of the event. An executive decision was made to cancel the program in consideration of everyone’s safety; unfortunately we did not have everyone’s contact information and were only able to notify a few people. In truth, it was a no win situation. If we didn’t cancel the program, attendance would have suffered and people would have been risking a great deal to get to the program. We are currently attempting to reschedule the DEAR event and will notify you of any updates. For future reference, please be sure to call 215-790-3677 in regards to any YPN information. Any changes to YPN program information will be noted on the voicemail message. We understand that many of you are upset about the situation, but we’re asking for your understanding. Due to this experience, YPN has created a process to ensure that this does not happen again. Thank you for your continued support of YPN. We look forward to seeing you at future events. Sincerely, YPN Executive Team
The results are in from Voice of Young Philadelphia: Decide, Discuss, Vote Survey: Top 5 Issues of 2007YPN joined Young America PAC and Young Involved Philadelphia with support from the Committee of Seventy joined together to survey our collective memberships to find out which issues are important to young professionals this election year. 489 of the Philadelphia region’s young adults responded to the survey released by “Voice of Young Philadelphia: Decide, Discuss, Vote,” sponsored by Young America PAC, Young Involved Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's Young Professional Network with support from the Committee of Seventy. The survey conducted over a 2-week period asked participants to choose 5 issues which they saw as important this election year, out of a predetermined list of 35. What was important to the Young Philadelphians surveyed? The overall top-ranked issue by those responding to the survey was Crime/Gun Control and Criminal Justice at 65.2%. Breaking down this information further, it was in the top 5 of responses in every neighborhood. A surprising number 2 in overall rankings was Mass/Public Transportation at 42.1%. Issues that were not ranked in the top 5 overall but did rank in the top 5 in specific communities include Taxes, Poverty/Homelessness/Housing, and Neighborhood/Community Development. The Top 5 Issues based on this overall survey results:
With the information provided from this survey, the three organizations will be working together on events focused on the issues most important to the Young Philadelphians represented in the survey results – with the goal to discuss and educate on the issues, so that individuals are informed when they got to the polls in May. Additional information will be forthcoming.
